About The Artist

Shards of America is an exploration of American culture by Toronto based artist Phil Bergerson. Using the poetry of signs and landscapes as guides, Bergerson created this work from the perspective of an “empathetic neighbour.“ He approaches his work as an archaeological study, referencing the iconic images of photographers such as Walker Evans, Robert Frank and Nathan Lyons.

Born in 1947, Phil Bergerson has been creating photo-based work for more than thirty years, and his reputation continues to grow with the publication of the Shards of America book. Widely exhibited, his work is included in the collections of the Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography and the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris. He is represented by Stephen Bulger Gallery in Toronto.
