Life Stories brings together confessional video portraits documenting the stories of unusual individuals. Conveying personal events or conditions, these are the results of matter-of-fact circumstances shaped by personal pain: A woman married to the Berlin Wall, Israeli soldiers and prostitutes at nightclubs, and a man whose story is absurdly hijacked by an artist. Works by Tova Mozard, Maayan Amir and Ruti Sela, and Meiro Koizumi culminate in an exhibition that capitalizes on exhibitionism, voyeurism, and the power of the camera.
Artist Biographies
Maayan Amir and Ruti Sela are based in Israel. Their collaborative video projects have been shown throughout Israel and internationally including the Storefront for Art and Architecture (New York), Pompidou Center (Paris), Sydney Biennal, and the House of World Cultures (Berlin). Meiro Koizumi is based in Japan. Presentations of his work have taken place at the Stedelijk Museum Bureau (Amsterdam), Tate Modern (London), and Govett Brewster Art Gallery (New Zealand). He is represented by Dicksmith Gallery and Nicole Klagsbrun Gallery. Tova Mozard is based in Sweden. Presentation venues include Moderna Museet (Stockholm), the CC7 Biennal (Stockholm), Vox Populi (Philadelphia), Galerie Opdhal (Berlin), and SMAK (Ghent). Mozard is represented by APL/Peter Bergman Gallery.
Curator Biography
Chen Tamir is a curator and writer dividing her time between Toronto, New York, and Tel Aviv. She holds an M.A. in Curatorial Studies from Bard College, a B.F.A. in Visual Art and a B.A. in Anthropology from York University. She is also a curator at Flux Factory, an artist-run center in Queens, New York.
