Real Remnants of Fictive Wars V (2004) is part of a larger series of “land art” videos in which Gaillard activates industrial fire extinguishers in carefully chosen landscapes. Each work documents a performative vandalism to a different site, releasing a thick white powder that creates a vaporous cloud as well as a veiled threat.
Desniansky Raion (2007) alternates between order and chaos, registering the existence, decay, and demolition of modernist and brutalist buildings and housing projects. Questioning man’s traces in nature in an iconoclastic way, Gaillard juxtaposes a range of aesthetic gestures from vandalism to minimalism, romanticism and Land Art.
Artist Biography
Cyprien Gaillard was born in Paris, France in 1980 where he lives and works. He has upcoming solo shows at MUSAC, Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Castilla y Leon and Frac Champagne Ardenne, Reims. His past exhibitions include the Museum Fridericianum, Kassel, Germany; the Hayward Gallery Project Space, London, England; the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, France; and L’Atelier du Jeu de Paume, Paris. He is presently in the exhibition Younger Than Jesus, New Museum, New York. He has also participated in numerous group shows including the 5th Berlin Biennale, Berlin, Germany; The Collection One at the Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, Rotterdam, The Netherlands; and the 2007 Biennale d'art Contemporain de Lyon, Lyon, France.
Organizer Biographies
Kathrin Meyer lives in Berlin, Germany, where she works as an editor for argobooks. She has worked on several artist books and exhibition catalogs and was a curatorial assistant for the exhibition project Between Two Deaths at ZKM in Karlsruhe, Germany, in 2006.
Tim Saltarelli is an artist and curator living in Brooklyn, NY. He is a graduate of the Image Arts program at Ryerson University, Toronto, holds a Master of Fine Arts degree from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and works at Elizabeth Dee Gallery, New York, where he organizes exhibitions.
