Study Session: Rudzienko

Responding to Gallery TPW’s current exhibition, Sharon Lockhart’s film installation Rudzienko, educator and curator Karyn Sandlos will host a study session thinking through the lens of critical pedagogy, psychoanalysis and ethics. We’ll gather together to collectively experience Lockhart’s work and more broadly consider artistic/educational collaborations between adults and children/youth. Working through philosopher Hannah Arendt’s demand that the meeting of adults and children is an ethical obligation yet to be accomplished, we’ll consider such spaces of collaboration, and their representations, as states of becoming rather than a set of fixed relations.
This study session is free and open to anyone, but advance registration is requested.

Biography
Dr. Karyn Sandlos is associate professor of education and the arts at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC). Her research interests include sexuality education and film, curriculum and curation, psychoanalysis and the aesthetics of desire in teaching, and schooling as a space of emotional struggle. Research projects and collaborations include The Emotional Geography of Sexual Health Education: Toward a Revitalized Curriculum and "What's The Real Deal on Power and Place?": Youth Reframing Sexuality Education. Sandlos was co-curator of War at a Distance, an exhibition and symposium that blurred the lines between journalistic and artistic representations of the war in Afghanistan, at Gallery TPW in Toronto. Sandlos recently completed the Psychoanalytic Research Training Program at the Yale Child Study Center in New Haven, CT. In Fall 2016, she became a clinical training candidate at the Chicago Institute for Psychoanalysis.
