Gallery TPW is pleased to present the public launch of our 2010-2011 curatorial residency with cheyanne turions. A one-night screening, works in The Permanent Longing for Elsewhere use frustration to explore the ways that paradigms of nationalism are breaking down. Understanding displacement as a common, contemporary experience, these films attempt to articulate how one’s origins figure into a self-positioning that is constantly in flux. By linking the works in The Permanent Longing for Elsewhere, turions proposes the development of personal ethical systems that negotiate the translation of historical, economic and cultural politics.

The program includes the following works:

Rainer Ganahl (US/Austrian), I Hate Karl Marx (2010), 6 minutes
Bouchra Khalili (Moroccan/French), Mapping Journey #3 (2009), 4 minutes
John Smith (UK), Flag Mountain (2010), 8 minutes
Daniela Swarowsky (Austria/Netherlands/Germany), Messages from Paradise #1, Egypt: Austria, About the Permanent Longing for Elsewhere (2009), 44 minutes
