A heady mix of lingering beauty and offbeat humour, Ben Rivers’ four-part, 16mm film, Slow Action extends the artist’s interest in hermetic, rural existence by investigating four parallel worlds in an ostensibly utopian, post-apocalyptic universe. Invoking the concept of island biogeography—the study of rich, morphing ecosystems pertaining to isolated areas with challenging habitats—Slow Action transforms four real locales into wholly imagined futuristic communities. Referencing classic-documentary and ’50s-era ethnographic cinema, Rivers mischievously plays with the disarming and ironic nature of science fiction.
Slow Action is presented in collaboration with the Toronto International Film Festival’s Future Projections Programme. For more information visit http://tiff.net/thefestival
