Curator-in-Residence 2011
Gallery TPW, in partnership with the Images Festival, is excited to welcome cheyanne turions as our 2010-2011 Curatorial Resident. Over the course of the year cheyanne will be engaged in research and programming culminating in exhibition and screening presentations at both TPW and Images.Recently relocating from Vancouver to Toronto, cheyanne is an independent writer, programmer and curator with formal training in philosophy. Conceptualizing curation and criticism as social gestures, cheyanne’s goal is to engage audiences in a discussion of the cultural, political and theoretical conditions that have informed the production artworks, thereby creating a forum for critical analysis. cheyanne is regularly reflecting on her research process and documenting her curiosities online; visit her website often.

All Our Memories Significant in Retrospect takes a formal consideration as its organizing principal: text-based cinema. In my conception of the term, text-based cinema is moving image work where the use of the written word is conceived as integral to the formation of meaning acquired through the cinematic experience.

Gallery TPW is pleased to present the public launch of our 2010-2011 curatorial residency with cheyanne turions. A one-night screening, works in The Permanent Longing for Elsewhere use frustration to explore the ways that paradigms of nationalism are breaking down. Understanding displacement as a common, contemporary experience, these films attempt to articulate how one’s origins figure into a self-positioning that is constantly in flux. By linking the works in The Permanent Longing for Elsewhere, turions proposes the development of personal ethical systems that negotiate the translation of historical, economic and cultural politics.
