ABOUT GALLERY TPW
Founded as The Toronto Photographers Workshop in 1977, Gallery TPW was created by a group of fifty artists and curators who were passionate about the need to support photography as an art form. As conversations about contemporary art practice evolved and photography gained legitimacy, the gallery expanded its medium-specific mandate to include new forms of imaging and time-based work. In the 1980s, when a new wave of artists joined, the gallery began to also address issues related to feminism, Latin American liberation struggles and LGBTQ rights. Since its inception, Gallery TPW has exhibited the work of more than a thousand artists, regularly advocated on behalf of the arts community, and developed an outstanding curatorial program.
Following the retirement of Founder Gary Hall, Gallery TPW is emerging from a period of transition and self-reflection. Once again, a community of artists is rallying together to affirm the gallery’s vision and values. Building on the legacy of our past we are asking ourselves: how does an artist-run centre with our history best serve its communities today? While our values remain, we are reimagining our role in the present context.

ABOUT THE JOB
Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director leads all aspects of the operations of Gallery TPW. They define and implement strategic initiatives to foster the vitality of the gallery through programming, community engagement, financial stability, and human resources management.
The Executive Director works with the staff and Board to set short and long-term goals to fulfill TPW’s mission and mandate. As the senior officer and spokesperson for TPW, the Executive Director is a leader in the arts community in Toronto and beyond, and a vocal advocate for the gallery and artist-run culture.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Administration and Finance
Shares and implements the overall mandate, mission and vision with the Board of Directors. Should have extensive familiarity with local, national and international art communities. Oversees and manages relations with the Board of Directors. Takes primary responsibility for the financial management and ongoing sustainability of the gallery, including budgeting, fundraising, grant writing, and bookkeeping. Develops and implements gallery policies.
Takes primary responsibility for the hiring, management, evaluation and professional development of staff. Fosters a collaborative work environment. Works closely with the curator to develop key community connections and coordinate the annual programming of Gallery TPW both in the exhibition space and beyond the physical facility. Meets regularly with staff to ensure clear communication regarding programming, projects and development.
Leads fundraising activities, including annual events, targeted campaigns, membership, exhibitions and programming support, granting opportunities, and other partnerships. Cultivates and fosters relationships with donors, members, granting agencies and other supporters.
Communications and Outreach
Ensures clear and transparent internal communication between staff, Board members, advisory committee members and TPW’s general membership. Acts as the primary spokesperson for the gallery with media (with the exception of programming), arts councils, granting agencies, professional associations and advocacy groups, among others. Directs and oversees the overall communications and marketing strategies.
– 5-10 years experience as a senior manager in the non-profit sector and in a culture-related field
– Strong knowledge of contemporary art – photography, time-based practices, performance and/or public programming experience an asset
– Demonstrated commitment to decolonizing art practices
– Knowledge of the historic and contemporary contexts of Indigenous peoples in Canada
– A familiarity with the recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission
– A history of working side-by-side with marginalized communities including but not limited to LGBTQ2 people, Black people, Persons of Color as well as Indigenous communities; and an understanding of issues of representation in the arts ecology in Canada
– History of working with diverse staff, artists and community members
– Proven success with programming contemporary art and an excellent rapport within the arts community
– Must be highly organized, detail oriented, committed to quality and able to Work independently with minimal supervision
– Outstanding skills in financial management, strategic thinking and project management
– Demonstrated success in grant-writing and fundraising
– Strong knowledge of arts councils and funding agencies in Canada
– Proven ability to cultivate donors
– Proven ability to promote financial sustainability
– Demonstrated ability to foster a collaborative work environment
– Demonstrated ability to fluidly and effectively articulate ideas, orally and in writing
– Competence with word processing, spreadsheet and database software working knowledge of a widely spoken language in the City of Toronto, other than English, is an asset
Compensation ranges from $55K – $65K per annum, commensurate with experience. This position is subject to a six month probationary period.
